SECTION 01

How much does a year of window cleaning cost?

Around £390 for a full year of cleans every four weeks on an average-sized home, based on Premier Clean's price of about £30 a clean.

That is strong value. UK price guides put a regular window clean anywhere from £12 to £55 a visit depending on the home (Fantastic Services 2026 price guide). It also puts the gift in perspective. The average UK adult planned to spend £514 on Christmas presents in 2025 (Finder, Censuswide survey). A whole year of clean windows costs less than that, and it lasts twelve months rather than one morning.

SECTION 02

Do clean windows make people happier?

Yes, mainly because they let more daylight into the home, and daylight is closely tied to mood and sleep.

A Monash University study of more than 400,000 people in the UK Biobank found that getting too little daytime light was a risk factor for depressive symptoms, low mood and insomnia. People who spent more time in daylight had fewer depressive symptoms, slept better and found it easier to wake up (Monash University).

The effect holds inside the home too. In a randomised controlled trial with 750 participants, the amount of natural light in a home significantly affected how happy or sad people felt about the space. The settings that let the most daylight in had the biggest positive impact (Morales-Bravo and Navarrete-Hernandez, Building and Environment, 2022).

Most of us spend the majority of our waking hours indoors, especially in a UK winter. The windows we look through every day are the main way daylight reaches us.

SECTION 03

How much light do dirty windows block?

Typically up to around 10% on ordinary windows, and more on sloped glass such as conservatory roofs and skylights.

  • A Brno University of Technology study measured glazing in three Czech cities over six months. Dirt build-up usually cut light transmission by 4 to 8% (Macháová and Vajkay, BUT).
  • Field surveys of urban buildings have found losses of usually less than 10% from dirt on windows (CEPT University research summary).
  • Daylight design standards build this in. The IES LM-83-12 standard assumes a 5% dirt loss for vertical windows, 10% for sloped glazing and 15% for near-flat skylights (same source).

The loss builds up gradually, so most people never notice it happening. They just notice the difference when the glass is suddenly clear again. Dirty glass also blurs the view outside, which matters on grey days when every bit of light counts.

SECTION 04

Why does giving someone their time back make them happier?

Because paying to skip a chore reduces time stress, and that lifts wellbeing more than buying another possession.

Researchers from Harvard Business School and the University of British Columbia surveyed more than 6,000 adults across the US, Canada, Denmark and the Netherlands. People who spent money to free up time reported greater life satisfaction, whatever their income (ScienceAlert on Whillans et al., PNAS 2017).

They then ran an experiment. Working adults spent the same small sum on a time-saving purchase one weekend and on a material purchase another. They felt happier after the time-saving one (Whillans et al., PNAS, 2017).

This is what makes it such a good gift. The same researchers found that few people actually buy time for themselves, even when they can afford it (Cornell Evidence-Based Living). Many feel guilty paying for help with something they could do themselves. When someone else gives it to them, the guilt disappears and the benefit stays.

SECTION 05

Why is a year of window cleaning better than another present?

Because it is useful, it keeps arriving and it cannot end up in a drawer.

  • Unwanted gifts are common. 58% of UK adults have received at least one Christmas gift they did not like, with an estimated £1.27 billion spent on them (Finder, Censuswide survey, November 2024). Which? found that one in five people received an unwanted or unsuitable gift at Christmas 2024 (Which?, January 2025).
  • It gives two kinds of happiness. Research in Social Psychological and Personality Science found that physical gifts create frequent small moments of joy, while experiences create fewer but more intense ones with a longer afterglow (Pacific Standard summary). A year of cleans does a bit of both: a visit every few weeks and a home that feels brighter each time.
  • It suits people who have everything. Parents, grandparents, new homeowners, busy families with young children and anyone who finds ladders harder than they used to.
  • It adds no clutter. Nothing to store, nothing to return and nothing to re-gift.

SECTION 06

How do you gift a year of window cleaning?

Get a quote for their home, pick how often, then either pay as one gift or let friends and family club together.

  1. Check they are covered. Premier Clean works across Essex, Hertfordshire, North London and Norfolk, including Chelmsford, Braintree, Bishop's Stortford, Dunmow, Saffron Walden, Potters Bar, Barnet, Finchley and King's Lynn.
  2. Get a quote for their home. Use Premier Clean's instant online quote, available 24 hours a day. An average-sized home is around £30 a clean.
  3. Pick how often. Every 4 weeks (13 cleans, about £390 a year) keeps glass consistently clear. Every 8 weeks (about £195 a year) suits a smaller budget.
  4. Choose how to pay for it.
    • Club together with WIRRW. Set up a group gift on WIRRW so friends and family can each chip in. Four people giving £97.50 each covers a full year of 4-weekly cleans, as long as each of them chooses to cover the card processing cost at checkout. The recipient receives the money and books their cleans directly, so they choose the dates that suit them.
    • Arrange it with Premier Clean. Call them free on 0800 612 4590 to set up the cleans for the recipient's address.
  5. Make it feel like a gift. Print a card saying "A year of sunshine through your windows" with the first visit date.

Worth adding: gutter clearing, conservatory roof cleaning or solar panel cleaning. Conservatory roofs and skylights lose the most light to dirt, so they make a strong upgrade.

SECTION 07

Who do we use?

We use Premier Clean, because they combine a perfect 5-star Google rating with a pure water system that leaves glass spotless without a single chemical.

If you are giving a service as a gift, you need to trust the people turning up at someone else's door. Premier Clean is a long-established exterior cleaning business based in Dunmow, Essex, and its customers say it best.

  • 5 stars from 182 Google reviews. That is 182 customers across Essex, Hertfordshire, North London and Norfolk who were happy enough to say so publicly (Premier Clean on Google).
  • Pure water, no chemicals. Their Pure H2O system runs tap water through a five-stage reverse osmosis filter to produce 100% pure, de-ionised water. With no minerals or detergents, it dries to a smear-free shine and leaves no residue, so windows stay cleaner for longer, even after rain (Premier Clean Pure H2O).
  • Eco-friendly by design. No detergents or chemicals are used, so nothing runs off into the garden.
  • No ladders. Everything is cleaned from the ground with telescopic poles reaching up to 60ft. That protects gutters, flat roofs, lawns and flowerbeds, and nobody is peering in through bedroom windows.
  • Frames and sills included. The soft brushes clean glass, sills, frames and doors, not just the panes.
  • 100% money back guarantee. If anything is not right, call within 48 hours and they will come back and put it right. If they cannot, you get your money back (Premier Clean guarantees).
  • Rain clean guarantee. Because pure water leaves no residue, they can clean in the rain and still guarantee a smear-free finish. Useful in a British winter.

They also offer gutter clearing, conservatory roof cleaning, solar panel cleaning, pressure washing and roof moss removal, so the gift can grow with the home.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is window cleaning a good gift?

Yes. It brings more daylight into someone's home and saves them a chore all year. Research links both daylight and time-saving purchases to greater happiness.

How much does a year of window cleaning cost in the UK?

With Premier Clean, an average-sized home is around £30 a clean. That is about £390 a year for cleans every 4 weeks, or about £195 for every 8 weeks.

Who is a year of window cleaning a good gift for?

Parents and grandparents, new homeowners, busy families, people recovering from illness or anyone who struggles with ladders. It suits people who say they do not need anything.

How often should windows be cleaned?

Every 4 to 8 weeks for most homes. Regular cleans stop dirt building up and keep the glass consistently clear.

What is pure water window cleaning?

It uses tap water filtered by reverse osmosis to remove all minerals. Premier Clean's Pure H2O system cleans with no detergents or chemicals, dries smear-free and is done from the ground with no ladders.

Can several people chip in for one window cleaning gift?

Yes. A group gift on WIRRW lets friends and family each contribute towards the yearly total, and the recipient books the cleans themselves.

Is it awkward to give someone a cleaning service?

Not if you frame it as giving time and light rather than a comment on their home. "A year of sunshine" lands very differently from "your windows need a wash".
